What is Trichology?
Trichology is the science that studies all matters of concerting hair. This involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and diseases of the hair, scalp, and beard area.
Who is a Trichologist? Trichologist (Hair Care Expert / Specialist)
A Trichologist (Hair Care Expert / Specialist) is a certified hair and scalp specialist who
- Diagnoses and offers solutions to treat hair loss and /or hair breakage.
- The functions of a trichologist(Hair Care Expert / Specialist) includes an assessment of the following:
- Skin conditions which may lead to hair loss or which are in some way disfiguring eg. Psoriasis.
- Hair shaft defects
- Infections of the hair and /or skin.
- Excessive hair-hirsutism and hypertrichosis.
- Discoloration of hair by environmental contamination.
- General loss of hair appearance and /or condition.
- Hair infestation eg. Head lice.
- Hair problems arising from malnutrition (hair loss)
- Endocrine disorders such as under-secretion of the thyroid raised androgen levels. Polycystic ovary syndrome etc.
In addition, the Trichologist(Hair Care Expert / Specialist) acts in a counseling capacity to those clients contemplating hair transplantation or other replacement procedures.

Step 1
Question Time regarding:
- Personal information on nutrition and any health issues. In particular those you have experienced within the last 2-3 months.
- Family’s health history and whether your relatives have experienced any significant hair loss.
- Haircare: The types of products used and how often, type of chemical processes applied to the hair, and how you wear your hair.
Step 2
Hair Examination
- Microscopic analysis of the scalp is conducted in order to identify the disorders that exist.
- The hair is tested for elasticity, porosity, dryness, and brittleness.
- Hair samples are collected for further analysis.
- Photographs are taken of your hair.
Second Visit
The Trichologist Trichologist (Hair Care Expert / Specialist) Reports on step 1 and step 2 to the patients.
Follow-Up Visits
Follow-up Visits
The Trichologist(Hair Care Expert / Specialist) recommends products for the treatment and/or if necessary refer the Client to a medical doctor to assist the client in correcting hair and scalp disorders identified.
It should be noted that disorders require a series of treatments to clear up or control or correct disorders.
