Stretch marks are caused, literally, by a stretching of the skin. An increase in cortisone, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands can aggravate the process by weakening the elastic fibers in the skin.
Adolescents may notice stretch marks during growth spurts.
Pregnancy: Most pregnant women develop stretch marks by the end of their pregnancy. The physical stretching of the skin due to growing belly, along with hormonal factors leads to pregnancy stretch marks.
Medication use: Corticosteroid creams, lotions and pills, and chronic use of oral or systemic steroids can cause stretch marks.
Bodybuilding: Bodybuilding can make your skin stretch beyond limits. This might make you develop stretch marks too.
Weight gain: Stretch marks sometimes occur due to substantial weight gain.
Puberty: During puberty, your body goes through a growth spurt that your skin is often unable to keep up with. At this stage stretch marks might be common.
Conditions or diseases: Cushing’s syndrome and adrenal gland diseases can cause widespread stretch marks, as can Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and other hereditary (genetic) disorders.
Weightlifters: also can develop stretch marks, particularly on the arms.
Corticosteroids: If you are taking corticosteroids in oral or topical form for a long period of time, you may come across stretch marks.
Ethnicity: If you are dark-complexioned you have lower chances of getting stretch marks
Genetics: If your mom had stretch marks after her pregnancy or weight loss/gain, you may get them too when there is a fluctuation in your weight.
All stretch mark reduction treatments are nonsurgical without any risk or side effects. The treatment require multiple session which are completed in around 30 mins. There is no downtime and you can resume work immediately after the completion of treatment to remove stretch marks. Stretch marks are easier to treat when they are young stretch marks. When they are brand new, called striae rubra appear as raised red lines. At that point it’s easier to use pulsed dye or NG-YAG laser to target the blood vessels. Over time, usually after 6 months to 2 years, stretch marks fade to thinner, whitish lines called striae alba that are notoriously hard to treat.
